Exhibition on Shanxi Buddhist Art and Intangible Cultural Heritage
A rare art exhibition in the history of Mount Wutai - a sacred Buddhist mountain for thousands of years
The Exhibition on Shanxi Buddhist Art and Intangible Cultural Heritage opened on 19 July 2016 at the Great Sage Monastery of Bamboo Grove on Mount Wutai. The exhibition assembled a wide range of Buddhist art made in Shanxi from the ancient past up to modernity, presenting the dynamic interactions between Buddhism and local cultures as well as the long and influential history of Buddhism in the area.
As the curator, Guoying Stacy Zhang worked with the monastics, laity, and volunteers and presented a unique exhibition at one of the most sacred sites throughout Buddhist history. The exhibition coincides with the Second International Conference on the Wutai Cult, themed "Mañjuśrī in Motion: Multi-cultural, Cross-religious Characteristics and International Impact of the Wutai Cult" organised by The Wutai International Institute of Buddhism and East Asian Cultures, King’s College at the University of London, Tsinghua Institute for Ethics and Religions Studies (IERS), Fudan Buddhist Studies Forum, and UBC Buddhist Studies Forum.
